An interview with Corrie Keener:

Who are you outside of therapy?

I am most importantly a Christian, a wife to a very handsome dude, and a mom to three girls who are each so wonderful!

What do you do in your free time?

I love learning about biblical and psychological tools - yep, I like school. I love to be in the yard pruning and training my plants to grow in the direction I need to create a masterpiece. I love the sound of waves crashing on the beach. I like to clean and organize because I can think while I am doing it. I like to rile up the dogs, watch them play, and get excited from the attention I give them.

What is your personality like?

I think I am fun, refreshingly not perfect. I have been described as less clinical than what people see in movies. I believe the real me gives you the best chance to be authentically you.

What would you say is wrong with you?

Well, a lot of things. I snore; yep, it’s true—my poor husband. I also pretend that I am Bob, the builder! I think I can do it, but it is pretty sad when I am done. Many people would say they have an ugly past in this section. That is true of me, I have a not-so-perfect past, and Jesus plus counseling has used these struggles to create a compassionate therapist!

What is your experience?

For the past 22 years, I have worked at City Mission Ministries with people whose hurts and hang-ups have dragged them to the bottom of life. I have seen tremendous life changes occur when people care about people. I have provided over 5000 hours of therapy in my new profession as a Christian Counselor, and I am ready to begin your journey.

What are you like in counseling?

I have heard that I am different from other therapists. The question is, what does different mean? I admit that I get excited when change is about to bloom in the counseling room. Sometimes I can hardly contain the smile on my face! And sometimes my eyes give me away as I anticipate the words that spill out of you. It's like the night before a trip to Disneyland inside of me -- I can't wait for you to verbalize the growth that has been happening in therapy and claim it as your truth! If you are looking for a therapist who sometimes has her own emotions and is a natural person and not a “brick wall” (as one person told me about their previous counseling experiences)…here I am.
